Composer, pianist, teacher, author of publications about music. He is a graduate of the State College of Music (Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Muzyczna), currently the Academy of Music, in Kraków, which he completed with distinction majoring in both composition and music theory. He was taught composition by Stanisław Wiechowicz and, after the latter’s death, by Krzysztof Penderecki. He went on to study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, where he perfected his expertise in composition and piano performance in 1964, 1966 and 1968.

After completing his own education, Krzysztof Meyer began teaching at his alma mater (from 1966 to 1987). He was employed as the school’s pro-vice-chancellor between 1972 and 1975, and as director of the Music Theory Department from 1975 to 1987. He again taught at the school in 2008 – 2014. He was also employed, for more than twenty years since 1987, as a professor of composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. In addition, he lectured on contemporary music issues in a number of different countries, such as Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Switzerland, Venezuela and the Soviet Union.

As a pianist, he played with Zespół MW2, with whom he appeared in concert in Poland and throughout Europe between 1966 and 1968. In subsequent years, he gave concerts as a piano soloist and chamber musician mostly performing his own compositions and focusing on writing music as his primary field of artistic activity.

Krzysztof Meyer was a member of the General Board of the Polish Composers’ Union between 1971 and 1989, and served as its President from 1985 to 1989. He sat on the Programme Committee of the International Festival of Contemporary Music ‘Warsaw Autumn’ for fourteen years between 1974 and 1988.

Apart from composing, the artist also writes about music. He is the author of a monograph on Dmitri Shostakovich translated into 5 languages and the co-author of a two-volume monograph on Witold Lutosławski, in addition to writing several dozen articles, mainly devoted to contemporary music, published in Poland and abroad.
