Andrzej Tatarski – chairman of the jury

Pianist and teacher. He leads an intensive artistic life as a soloist and a chamber musician. A significant place in the artist’s varied and extensive repertoire is occupied by works written by nineteenth- and twentieth-century Polish composers; he is also frequently invited to perform premieres of works by the contemporary Polish composers. On the other hand, Andrzej Tatarski’s interests extend to French music and especially works composed by Olivier Messiaen. He was the first Polish pianist to perform Messiaen’s collections of Catalogue d’oiseaux and six Petites esquisses d’oiseaux.

The artist has taken part in prestigious music festivals, such as the Poznań Musical Spring (Poznańska Wiosna Muzyczna) in Poznań, the Warsaw Autumn (Warszawska Jesień) in Warsaw, the Days of Kraków Composers (Dni Kompozytorów Krakowskich) in Kraków, the Days of Karol Szymanowski’s Music (Dni Muzyki Karola Szymanowskiego) in Zakopane, Wratislavia Cantans in Wrocław, the Festival of Polish Piano Music (Festiwal Pianistyki Polskiej) in Słupsk, the Festival of Polish Contemporary Music (Festiwal Polskiej Muzyki Współczesnej) in Wrocław and the International Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdrój. He has been regularly invited to take part in the successive cycles of Chopin recitals at Fryderyk Chopin’s birthplace home in Żelazowa Wola and the summer Chopin Concerts held at Łazienki Park (Łazienki Królewskie) in Warsaw. He has appeared alongside leading Polish symphony and chamber orchestras under such distinguished conductors as Mirosław Błaszczyk, Andrzej Boreyko, Tomasz Bugaj, Gabriel Chmura, Agnieszka Duczmal, José Maria Florêncio, Grzegorz Nowak and Marek Pijarowski. He has appeared in concert throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia, e.g. in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Jamaica, Cuba, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the countries of the former Soviet Union, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland and Turkey.

Andrzej Tatarski regularly sits on the juries of national and international piano and chamber music competitions. He has conducted master classes in Poland and abroad, e.g. in the Czech Republic, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States and Italy.

The artist’s discography includes numerous archival recordings for Polish and foreign radio stations, television and film, in addition to CD releases. For the label Selene, he has recorded piano works by Henryk Wieniawski and Józef Wieniawski, Raul Koczalski and Ignacy Friedman, as well as Harnasie by Karol Szymanowski released by Dux, in a version for two pianos. He has also made world premiere recordings of Apolinary Szeluto’s chamber works. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with a host of eminent Polish musicians on the production of numerous CD releases.

Andrzej Tatarski has graduated with distinction from the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, where he studied piano with Prof. Olga Iliwicka-Dąbrowska. He has perfected his piano technique at postgraduate studies with Prof. Vlado Perlemuter in Paris. He taught piano in his alma mater for many years.
