Pianist, winner of the Thirteenth International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1995. During that competition, he was favourite with the jury as well as the press and the audience. Since the very beginning, his career has centred around the work and figure of Fryderyk Chopin. The success he achieved at the competition made Giusiano one of the greatest pianists in the world; it was a calling card to his subsequent performances at the most prestigious concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Theatre in Verona, La Scala in Milan, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo and many other venues.
The artist has been regularly invited to the French festivals of Aix-en-Provence, de La Roque-d'Anthéron, Chaise-Dieu, ‘Chopin chez George Sand’ in La Châtre, the Chopin Festival in Bagatelle, La Folle Journée or the Berlioz Festival. He has also appeared in Ravello, Italy, at the Ruhr Piano Festival in Germany, ‘Chopin and His Europe’ in Warsaw, the Chopin Festival in Duszniki Zdrój and Antonin. Philippe Giusiano has toured Germany, Japan, Austria, Poland, Russia, Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Denmark, Lithuania, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and the Middle East. He has performed with renowned orchestras and conductors, including Antoni Wit, Krzysztof Penderecki, Philippe Entremont, Kazimierz Kord, Yutaka Sado, Jacek Kaspszyk, Grzegorz Nowak and Marek Pijarowski.
During the jubilee 200th year of Fryderyk Chopin’s birth, the artist was enthusiastically greeted in France, Spain, the Middle East, Japan, Poland and Scandinavia, where he presented a programme featuring Chopin’s complete works for piano and orchestra.
Philippe Giusiano’s recordings, mainly with music by Fryderyk Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninoff, have met with wide critical acclaim. His Chopin. 24 Preludes and Etudes was a worldwide success. O. Bellamy in Le Monde de la Musique, wrote about Giusiano’s second Chopin release: „One feels compelled to think that this is exactly how Chopin played it”. Latest album, recorded in 2017 for the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, contained Chopin’s early works. Upcoming release will feature the Piano Concerto Op. 2 by Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński.
Parallel to his artistic career, the pianist conducts master classes in Poland and Japan. He has been a guest lecturer at the Heisei Music College in Kumamoto, Japan since 2008.
Philippe Giusiano was born in Marseille in 1973. He began his music education in his home town, when he was 5. He went on to study at the Conservatoire de Région de Marseille with Odile Poisson and Pierre Barbizet and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris with Jacques Rouvier. He completed the latter school at the age of 16. In 1993, he was awarded a scholarship that enabled him to study at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. During the studies, he won a host of prizes at domestic and international competitions for young pianists.
Philippe Giusiano received the Medal of the City of Marseille in 2012.
